About Judge Dave Hall

Judge Dave Hall: Serving Durham Since 2018

Elected to the District Court bench in 2018, Judge Dave Hall is currently in his eighth year of service to the Durham community. He is a proud "Double Eagle," holding both his law degree and a Master of Business Administration from North Carolina Central University's School of Law and School of Business, respectively.

Judge Hall's legal career has been diverse, encompassing work as an indigent defense attorney and with various non-profits, including SEEDS and the Southern Coalition for Social Justice. His personal experiences are equally broad; he has been married for over 35 years to his wife, Tia (a well-known figure in Durham's political, social, and fundraising spheres), and is a father to three adult children. Judge Hall is also a victim of gun violence and has dedicated his work to helping thousands address the collateral consequences of contact with the criminal legal system.

Currently, Judge Hall presides over a wide range of court types, including Recovery Court (formerly Adult Drug Treatment Court), Family, Traffic, Domestic Violence, Criminal, Civil, and Civil Jury trials. He also serves as a mentor for The Men of Color Scholar's Institute at Durham Tech.

Committed to dignity, respect, and equity, Judge Hall ensures all who appear before him are treated fairly.

In his personal time, his hobbies include restoring vintage cars, touring on his motorcycle, and flying remote control airplanes. His educational background also includes studies in art and trades.
